We created three sorts of schedules for our filming and this was the shooting schedule which I made in order to allow us to have an understading of what was going to happen in each shot and how long the shot would last. After completing this schedule we had all the necessary planning and research done and we were ready to film.
SilverStreet Trailer
This is our final trailer
In our trailer we used many different media aspects to portray certain things, for example we used camera shots to portray a characters status, we used music to convey the atmosphere, we used editing to make it fast paced and exciting, and finally we used mise-en-scene to convey the personality of these characters.
There was a wide variety of camera shots used in order to portray different things. an example is where we see Ashley coming out of the church and we see the switch in his personality, we wanted this character to come across as powerful and superior to the audience, therefore we used a low angled shot of him coming out of the church as this would make him appear more big and imposing. Another example is where the victim of the attack (Abdourahman) is on the floor after getting beaten up by the attacker, we used a high angled shot this time in contrast to the previous low angle shot, and for similar reasons, in this instance we wanted the victim to seem weak and hopeless, therefore using a high angled shot of him made him appear to be more vulnerable.
Mise-en-scene was also as aspect used to portray certain things in the trailer. We see the attacker go into the church dressed casually wearing jeans, and a jacket, but after he comes out of the church we see him put a cap on and a hood over it, this carries a detonation with it that he is a criminal or thug, and this is exactly what we wanted to portray to the audience. In addition another important place where mise-en-scene was used is the drugs, which carries a connotation and denotation of crime, furthermore we made all this criminal activity take place just outside of a church to heighten the irony, therefore mise-en-scene was also used to convey certain things to the audience.
Music is an important aspect of our trailer as it conveys a lot and helps to establish what is going on in the trailer. For example when the first character is seen going into the church the music is very calm and peaceful, but still slightly upbeat and modern, this is done to portray the characters youth, however when the character comes out of the church and we are about to see his dark side, then it becomes confirmed that there is going to be a turn of events as the music becomes alot more fast paced, upbeat and very energetic. This conveys the importance of music in educating the audience about the contents of the trailer.
Finally editing was also used to convey certain things to the audience, for example we made the cuts between shots fairly fast paced as we wanted the audience to feel the anticipation of the turn in events and to keep up the excitement, therefore we made some quick cuts where we thought it was appropriate, so editing was another media aspect used to portray the story of the trailer to the audience and also to have an affect on them of feeling excited and anxious.
In conclusion all four of the media aspects used were very important and were taken into much consideration, combining the four aspects helped us greatly to portray alot of things to the audience and also to have an affect on them.
Magazine front cover
The picture on the left hand side is the front cover of a magazine i designed to promote my new soap opera and the one on the left hand side is a professional magazine front cover. I tried to use this professional magazine front cover to create my own, i noticed that the background was always a light blue with the main font for the main story being yellow and bold and striking, so i tried to imitate this, but not a complete copy. Although they are not exactly the same, there are similarities, such as using bold colors and striking patterns on the things that i wanted to stand out on the whole page, such as the price. Furthermore i did not like the look of the messy front cover of the professional version and therefore i tried to make mine more neat.
Overall i used the professional version as a template and something to give me ideas from, but with my own magazine cover i designed how i thought it would appeal to the audience.
After filming we were to create the front cover of a magazine which would be promoting SilverStreet and this is how i done it.
Evaluation Task 3
What have you learned from audience feedback ?
For A level media we were put into groups with who we had to make productions with. In our first year we were required to make the opening of a thriller and in the second year we had to make a trailer for a new soap opera. I am going to discuss what we have learnt from our audience feedback over the years for both of our productions.
First of all we had to identify a target audience and try to relate the soap to them as much as possible. This is Mohammed. He is an 18 year old student who goes to college and lives in a similar area to SilverStreet with similar problems. Mohammed is a typical target audience for the new soap opera SilverStreet as he will be able to relate to alot of the characters in the soap and he will just be able to put himself in the soap as he will be familiar with the way SilverStreet is.
Trailer of our soap opera
This is our trailer for our soap SilverStreet. Before we actually burned our trailer onto a CD we wanted to get some audience feedback on what they thought of our trailer. In order to get the audiences view on our soap trailer, we uploaded our trailer onto Youtube. From doing this we received comments from the audience, and we learned that the audience were pleased with the camera shots and thought they were creative, but were not so happy with the music as they thought it was boring, therefore before finalising our trailer we made the music more upbeat and energetic.
Trailer of focus group interview
This is a focus group interview we done in order for some further feedback from the audience of our proposed soap opera idea. We interviewed two people of culturally different backgrounds and with different interests in order to get feedback from a wider audience. From these interviewees, we discovered that different sorts of people were interested in the idea for our soap opera and were looking foward to it as it targets many different audiences from different backgrounds, age groups and genders.
Before we actually started to create our thriller opening we had to do a lot of other tasks such as planning and research tasks, this was done in order to enable us to make an effective production at a good quality. We started off by gathering ideas for our thriller opening and we put our ideas together. However we still had to get other peoples views on our idea to see whether people would be interested in our thriller and also to receive positive and negative criticism. We decided to create and hand out questionnaires based on our thriller with a range of questions which would help us decide what areas of our thriller were good and should stay and also what areas of our thriller were not so good an could be considered for change, although if there were certain ideas about our thriller that the audience did not like then we were not just going to completely eliminate them if we were confident about them. We also done a focus group interview which was designed to go into depth about what people liked about thrillers and what not, which aided us further in our research.
First of all we gathered our ideas together and based our questions on these ideas, we then handed the questionnaires out to a wide range of people from young to old and from male to female. Once we had collected our completed questionnaires back from people, we sat down and analysed the feedback in order to make changes to our thriller if we thought it was necessary, this would allow our thriller to appeal more to audiences. From our questionnaires on our thriller we received quite a bit of useful information, for example, we discovered that the thriller genre was a popular choice among people, and we also discovered reasons for why the audience like the thriller genre. The majority of the people told us that the main reason they like thrillers is due to all the tension and mystery in thrillers, we used this information and tried to implement it as much as possible in our own thriller, by adding tense moments and by using mystery throughout the thriller, we done this using music and also mise-en-scene. Our questionnaire also told us that it was mostly a lot of young people from ages about 15 – 25 who preferred this genre, so we again tried to use this information and implement these ideas with our own thriller by using mainly young characters so that they might be able to relate to it more.
Another technique we used to gain audience feed back was by doing a focus group interview. We gathered a few people of different ages and sex and we asked them similar questions but this time the questions were more closed and was focusing on our thriller and not just the thriller genre in general. We asked around seven different question and from these focus group interview questions we learned that people also liked the thriller genre not just because of the tension and mystery, but also due to the fact that the thriller genre is an umbrella genre and mixes any two genres, the audience seemed to like the idea of merging two genres to generate more conventions and therefore creating more emotions and getting more reactions from the viewers. Furthermore from both our questionnaires and our focus group interview we found that the most popular type of thriller the audience preferred was either a horror thriller or a mystery thriller, we took these findings on board and we decided that we had made the right choice to do a horror thriller, but at the same time we were also creating a mystery thriller so this information gave us more confidence to stick with the type of thriller we had chosen to do. We used these same techniques again this time with our soap opera, in order to get feedback from the audience on what they thought of our product, and like before we took aboard what the audience said and made changes to our production if we deemed it necessary.
Overall we have learnt a lot of very useful information from our audience feed back. We used techniques such as questionnaires and focus group interviews to get the most possible amount of information regarding audience’s views on the thriller genre and our own thriller which we were making. We did find useful information and we did implement as much of this information and knowledge into our own thriller. The audience feed back allowed us to improve our thriller and make it better and appeal to the viewers more, so therefore the audience feed back gave us very useful knowledge and helped us in the process of creating our thriller.
